“I am certainly not an advocate for frequent and untried changes in laws and constitutions. I think moderate imperfections had better be borne with; because, when once known, we accommodate ourselves to them, and find practical means of correcting their ill effects. But I know also, that laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths disclosed, and manners and opinions change with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also, and keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy, as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.” – Jefferson to H. Tompkinson (AKA Samuel Kercheval), July 12, 1816
We should and need to evolve.
This is like a child that grows into a teen into a young adult into an adult into a senior.
Gosh if I told you the way I used to think about how things were done, how stuff was made, where money came from and what things cost. How the law worked and why. And it goes on and on and on. How many times did you say “but I was young I didn’t know” or ” I thought it was different because of : fill in the blank”
Here is the reality – Life happens, things change and shit breaks.
At some point you need to move forward, mature, evolve. Learn from your experiences. And so does your country.
Times are changing… Again
Woman get to vote. Segregation has ended, interracial marriage is allowed. And If you are human you should be able to marry whomever you love.
Whether you understand it or not this law has no effect on you unless you plan on marrying someone who is gay. Then it just means you get a big (or small) wedding of your choosing and all the trimmings… Flowers, cake, band, per plate fee. Open bar, champagne toast, honeymoon and…
Oh wait, that’s the kind of wedding everybody else has too!
